Life is not the way it’s supposed to be, it’s the way it is. The way we cope with it makes the difference
I was chatting with a friend the other day about the pandemic and to be honest we were having a moan. We are missing friends, missing nights out, missing physical contact and generally feeling a bit bored. We spent about fifteen minutes in this conversation creating negative energy and feeling bad. After we had finished our moaning it got me thinking about how much time we spend in that space of negative energy. Even those fifteen minutes were enough to wind myself up and feel frustrated. I wonder how many of us spend much more time in that state of being and how it impacts our health and wellbeing?
It brought me to a quote that I love by Virginia Satir – Life is not the way it’s supposed to be, it’s the way it is. The way we cope with it makes the difference.
So on my own reflection of that conversation with my friend I invite you to consider how much time you spend resisting your current experience. Wishing something else was happening instead, feeling that you haven’t yet achieved what you want, feeling frustrated that life is happening to you.
Perhaps things haven’t turned out the way you wanted them to and you are struggling to get past the disappointment or let down of it. Perhaps you are angry or wound up with a situation you are currently experiencing. I mean, no-one expected a pandemic to happen when we jumped for joy at Big Ben’s chimes at midnight this year!
So life is the way it is……..
The ups and the downs, the beautiful and the chaos, the joy and the pain, the sadness and the happiness. It is the resistance to this that causes our suffering. The stories we create in our mind wishing things could have been different or should be different. The impatience of wanting something in the future that we haven’t yet got and the discontent or dissatisfaction that this creates within us.
The way we cope with how life is, is what makes the difference. Do we succumb to being a victim, blaming events and others for our fate and unhappiness? Or do we embrace the NOW, look a challenge in the eye and say bring it on? De we accept ‘what is’ as an opportunity to learn about ourselves and what we can do to design the life we want to live? Do we live our life to the fullest creating a mindset and way of being that inspires us and others, that co creates a world of love and peace and brings joy and compassion to all?
I invite you to choose wisely how you cope with how life is. Choose wisely so that you bring gratitude and joy in to your everyday. Choose wisely so that you create a way of being that serves your highest good. Choose wisely because you deserve a life rich in abundance of love, laughter and joy.
